Prince Louis is marking his 8th birthday, and as tradition goes, a charming new photo of the young royal has been released.
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales shared a picture of their youngest son looking noticeably more grown-up during an Easter getaway to Cornwall earlier this month, captioning it: “Happy birthday, Louis! 8 today! 🎈”
The image was captured by the Wales family’s trusted photographer, Matt Porteous, and appears to have been taken during a family boat outing with his older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Smiling brightly, Louis wore a cosy Boden jumper to keep warm against the sea breeze.
He’s often said to resemble members of the Middleton family—especially his grandfather, Michael Middleton—but this latest photo has prompted a new wave of comparisons…
Like father, like son!
Royal fans were quick to point out the striking resemblance between Prince Louis and his father, Prince William, at a similar age.
One admirer even shared a side-by-side comparison, pairing the recent image of Louis with a throwback photo of William from a 1990 family holiday. In the older picture, the future Prince of Wales is seen alongside his parents, Princess Diana and King Charles III, as well as his younger brother, Prince Harry.
The photo was captured when Prince William was eight—the same age Prince Louis is now—while aboard a yacht owned by Juan Carlos I in Mallorca.
In the image, William is seen smiling broadly with a sweeping fringe, bearing a striking resemblance to his son. Picking up on the similarity, one social media user commented: “Oh, all the kids have William’s features.”

Another fan pointed out the similarity, writing: “Prince William at eight vs Prince Louis at eight.”
Still, not everyone agreed—one commenter argued that Prince Louis takes after his maternal side, saying: “Louis looks like The Middletons.”
Unseen family footage
The photo wasn’t the only treat marking Prince Louis’s birthday on Thursday. Later that day, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales delighted fans by releasing a heartfelt family video, featuring sweet moments with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Louis.
An energetic Prince Louis was seen enjoying a range of activities—playing cricket, running along the beach, and even leaping off a boat in a wetsuit.
The video was shared with the caption: “Thank you for all the birthday wishes for Prince Louis. 8 is great!” and, like the birthday photo, it was filmed by Matt Porteous.
While Prince William spent part of Thursday visiting a British Formula E team in Oxfordshire, it’s expected that the family later came together to celebrate at home in Windsor after school.
