For several years now, Prince William and Prince Harry have remained distant, with little sign of reconciliation on the horizon. And it doesn’t look like that situation will shift anytime soon.
The reason? Take a closer look at Prince Harry’s most recent remarks during his time in Australia.
During a recent visit to Australia with his wife Meghan Markle, Prince Harry once again spoke openly about life within the royal family. This time, however, he also revisited deeply personal memories involving his and Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana.
Speaking at the InterEdge Summit on Thursday, the duke reflected on the period following his mother’s passing. “After my mum died just before my 13th birthday – I was like: ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role – wherever this is headed, I don’t like it.’ It killed my mum and I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years.”
His words carried strong emotion—and sparked debate as well.
While it’s well known that Prince Harry has long been uncomfortable with royal duties, particularly since stepping back in 2020, referencing Princess Diana’s death in that context struck a different tone. The tragedy, which followed a car crash in Paris in 1997, remains a sensitive subject—and suggesting that royal life played a role in what “killed” her adds another layer of controversy.
It’s hard to even picture how Prince William might have reacted.
Not only did Prince Harry reference their mother’s passing in his speech, but he also tied it directly to the royal institution—the very system that Prince William is expected to one day lead, following his father, King Charles III.
It feels like a double hit—both on a personal level and in terms of duty. From Prince William’s perspective, it’s not hard to imagine this landing badly. Bringing their mother into criticism of royal life could be seen as crossing a line, and not something easily set aside or forgotten.
If anything, remarks like these may have pushed any hope of reconciliation between the brothers even further out of reach. The distance that already exists between Prince William and Prince Harry now seems wider than ever.
As for King Charles III, his response remains uncertain. This comes at a time when he and Prince Harry had only just begun to rebuild their strained relationship—making the situation all the more delicate.
In many ways, it may have felt inevitable that tensions would resurface sooner or later.
