Shoppers at an IKEA store in Belfast received an unexpected royal surprise on Friday, October 9, when Prince William and Princess Kate stepped behind the checkout counters during their visit to Northern Ireland.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were in the region to draw attention to efforts aimed at preventing homelessness, with their itinerary including a stop at the popular furniture retailer.
The engagement formed part of William’s Homewards initiative, which works alongside local charities and businesses to create employment opportunities for young people who may be at risk of losing their homes.
While visiting the store, the royal couple spoke with an employee who had secured a position through the programme, learning more about the opportunities it provides.
But William and Catherine did more than simply meet staff and hear about the initiative. They also took the opportunity to experience working in the store themselves.
Dressed in an elegant ruffled blouse and a new green tartan skirt, Catherine was filmed operating a checkout in footage shared on Instagram by The Times journalist Kate Mansey.
William joined in too, interacting with customers and chatting with shoppers as they made their purchases at the busy Belfast store.
Princess Kate received a quick lesson in operating the checkout system during her visit to IKEA, with a member of staff showing her how to process a card payment.
In footage shared by journalist Kate Mansey, the Princess served a mother shopping with two children. After completing the transaction, Catherine handed one of the girls her receipt and reminded the family about their purchase of sweets.
Pointing towards the bag, she said: “don’t forget these,” before warmly waving goodbye and adding: “Enjoy your dance lesson!”

The visit also gave William and Catherine an opportunity to hear firsthand about the impact of the Homewards employment initiative.
They spoke with a young woman who had found work at IKEA through the programme. She explained how gaining employment and forming connections with her colleagues had helped her become more confident, independent and secure in her everyday life.
The royal couple also held discussions with representatives from other British businesses about plans to build on the Northern Ireland pilot and extend the employment opportunities offered through Homewards.
Although a visit to IKEA might seem an unusual setting for a royal engagement, William and Kate have previously revealed that the Swedish furniture retailer has a place in their own family home.
Back in 2018, the couple told IKEA’s head of design, Marcus Engman, that they had chosen furniture from the company for Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s bedrooms at Kensington Palace.
Reacting to the revelation at the time, Engman expressed his pleasure that the brand appealed to families from all backgrounds.
“I’m proud that we can suit everybody,” he said, according to Hello! magazine.
“That’s what we want Ikea to be—for the many people of the world, both royalty and ordinary people.”
