Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were met with an enthusiastic reception in Nottingham today as they undertook their first official engagements together in Britain since returning to the UK over the summer.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attracted a gathering of supporters as they arrived in the city, beginning their visit at the Community Recording Studio (CRS) at approximately 10.30am.
Initially, fewer than 100 people appeared to be waiting outside the venue. However, more well-wishers arrived shortly before the couple, bringing the estimated crowd to between 150 and 200.
The occasion also drew considerable international attention, with more than 60 journalists and media representatives attending to cover the Sussexes’ visit.
Among those gathered were approximately 20 people associated with Nottingham’s Mencap, a local charity providing support to individuals with learning disabilities, autism and other vulnerabilities.
Several supporters waited behind barriers carrying bouquets and balloons for Harry and Meghan. Upon arriving, the couple spent around 20 minutes greeting members of the public before heading inside for their scheduled engagement.
One of those who had the opportunity to speak with Meghan was Ria Miller, who described an emotional exchange with the Duchess and claimed that she appeared visibly moved by the support.
Speaking to the Daily Express, Ria explained why she had made the effort to attend:
“I’m a Sussex supporter, as a woman and a mother I see what Meghan goes through daily, multiple articles written about her often false and debunked. And I just want them to see that there are real people, not social media trolls or royal commentators. They are real people who see her, appreciate and love her, and respect her. Give her the love.
“I got to give her a bouquet of flowers – we wanted to give her a physical representation of our love. She’s a woman of colour. There’s a lot of microaggressions around it. What has she done? Has she killed anybody? I did speak to her. And I said, We’re proud of you. We support you. She had water in her eyes. It was a beautiful reception. (I am) very proud of Nottingham today.”
Another well-wisher, Charlotte O’Neill, was also waiting outside the Community Recording Studio, hoping to see the royal couple in person.
Charlotte revealed that she had previously attended Prince Harry’s solo visit to Nottingham and decided to return for this latest appearance, this time accompanied by a friend.
She said: “I came last year to see him (when he was in the city on a solo visit), so I just thought, you know what, I’m just gonna come. I brought my friend along.”
When asked what had inspired her to attend the event, Charlotte O’Neill explained that seeing a prince in person was hardly an everyday opportunity.
She remarked: “It’s not very often you get to see a real-life prince, is it?”
Charlotte also expressed her enthusiasm for the Sussexes’ return to Britain, saying she was “well for” their visit to Nottingham. Reflecting on the challenges families sometimes experience, she added: “Every family has its ups and downs, don’t they?”
Another supporter, 67-year-old Margaret Langdon from Nottingham’s Carlton neighbourhood, welcomed the couple’s decision to visit a city outside the capital.
Margaret felt their appearance demonstrated that “it’s not all about London” and that “small cities matter as well”.
Speaking to the Press Association, she explained: “I’m a big fan. They’ve come to Nottingham to see us so the least we could do is come out and see them. It’s nice to see Meghan, because it’s not very often you get a woman of colour in that position. So I’ve come out to support her.”
The atmosphere remained lively throughout the couple’s walkabout, with Meghan sharing a particularly affectionate moment when she kissed one supporter on the cheek.
Inside the Community Recording Studio, Harry and Meghan spent time with musician and poet Jah Digga, who had attended the organisation during his childhood.
Meanwhile, the Duchess participated in a workshop with young girls, taking part in bracelet-making activities designed to encourage confidence and self-expression.
As the Sussexes prepared to leave the venue, enthusiastic supporters gathered around them once again, hoping to secure photographs, hugs or a brief personal interaction.
The couple subsequently continued their Nottingham engagements with a visit to Himmah Hub, a community organisation working to tackle food poverty and support local residents.
Around 50 well-wishers had assembled outside the gates of Himmah Hub, hoping to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as they arrived for the next stop on their Nottingham visit.
The couple were welcomed with cheers, while numerous spectators raised their phones to capture photographs and videos as the Duke and Duchess made their way into the building.
Despite the considerable public attention, the Sussexes’ appearances were not classified as official royal engagements. A letter sent to government stakeholders with King Charles’s authorisation had made clear that Harry and Meghan continue to hold the status of “private citizens”.
Nevertheless, the carefully organised visits, enthusiastic crowds and extensive media coverage gave the engagements many of the characteristics traditionally associated with royal appearances.
The Duke and Duchess reportedly regard themselves as “public figures” and were said to have been surprised by the letter formally clarifying their position.
The Nottingham engagements also represented a significant moment for Meghan, marking her first public appearances at events in the United Kingdom in four years.
Her previous public appearance in Britain had been in September 2022, when she attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
