Kate, the Princess of Wales, is said to have grown distant from Princess Eugenie — the youngest daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor — despite having several reasons to cross paths.
The two are rarely seen together outside of official royal engagements, even though they share some notable similarities. Both attended the prestigious Marlborough College and have a strong interest in art. Eugenie works as a director at the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth in London, while Kate studied Art History at the University of St Andrews, where she met Prince William.
However, an expert has suggested that their similarities largely end there, with the two women often aligned with different sides of the royal family.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said Kate does not “have that much in common” with the York sisters, who are known to be close to each other. He added that Eugenie, in particular, appears to have a stronger bond with her cousin, noting: “Eugenie, particularly, seems to be closer to Harry.”
The divide may date back to their time at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, where Kate focused on her studies, while Eugenie was reportedly involved in a more light-hearted but controversial incident.
She was once said to have been caught “frolicking naked in the ground” at the elite £61,000-a-year boarding school after an end-of-term celebration in 2008, when she was 18. Reports at the time claimed a senior staff member was alerted by noise on the grounds and discovered Eugenie along with a group of students dancing naked outside.
A staff member told The Sun: “The girls had been drinking, possibly in a local pub, and decided to let their hair down. For some reason they stripped off and started prancing about. It was light-hearted and they were sort of frolicking like nymphs.”
“But they got too noisy and staff discovered them. They had to quickly pick up their clothes and hot-foot it inside. She and the others were told they had to go home and only return to take their exams. There were not enough staff on Saturdays and Sundays to supervise them, and they were told they couldn’t be trusted to behave.”
A source told PA at the time: “It was nothing more than high jinks at the end of term in May. A group of them were reprimanded and that’s the end of the matter.”
The episode was seen as highlighting the contrast between Kate and Eugenie, with Kate going on to join the royal family just three years later after a more low-key time at the school.
Although both women have built successful careers and are committed to charitable work, they continue to be associated with different circles within the Royal Family.
