Kate Trades Summer Pastels for Rich, Moody Tones in Striking Autumn Style Transformation

September has proved to be an especially eventful month for the Princess of Wales. Alongside seeing her eldest son, Prince George, begin a new chapter at Eton, Catherine has maintained a packed schedule of royal engagements and public appearances.

With autumn now underway, Kate has also noticeably shifted the direction of her wardrobe. Her recent outfits have leaned towards deeper, moodier shades, with a sophisticated designer influence adding a distinctly luxurious finish to her seasonal style.

It represents a clear change from the lighter palette she favoured throughout spring and summer. During the warmer months, the Princess regularly stepped out in fresh whites, playful polka dots, vibrant yellows and soft pink shades, while her latest appearances have introduced a much darker aesthetic.

On Friday, details emerged of a previously private gathering hosted by Kate at Windsor Castle, where she welcomed participants from the Three Peaks Challenge along with members of their families for a special tea party.

For the Windsor Castle gathering, the Princess looked polished in a rich plum dress, styled with a coordinating belt and matching heels.

The outfit, which was seen for the first time when details of the event were released on Friday, was a new addition to Kate’s wardrobe from iconic British heritage house Burberry.

With its luxurious finish and deep seasonal shade, the elegant design perfectly reflected the autumnal direction Catherine has recently brought to her royal wardrobe.

A day earlier, Kate stepped out alone in Southend-on-Sea, where she visited the Forward Trust as part of Addiction Awareness Week.

For the engagement, the mother of three stayed true to her signature heritage-inspired style while continuing the darker colour palette that has defined her recent wardrobe. She paired cropped chocolate-brown trousers by Joseph with a coordinating knit top, completing the look with Boden loafers.

Adding a polished finishing touch, Catherine layered a double-breasted jacquard Max Mara blazer over the ensemble. The combination of rich brown tones once again reflected the Princess’s shift towards warm, seasonally appropriate autumn shades.

Earlier in the week, Catherine brought full royal glamour to London as she attended the Tuesday evening premiere of Tom Cruise’s action comedy Digger.

The mother of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis commanded attention at the star-studded screening, swapping her more understated daytime wardrobe for an elegant red-carpet look.

For the glamorous evening, Kate turned to one of her favourite designers, Jenny Packham, choosing a flowing purple gown that delivered plenty of red-carpet drama. The romantic design combined delicate pleating with cap sleeves, a plunging neckline and subtle semi-sheer elements.

Her jewellery, however, provided the most striking finishing touch. The 44-year-old Princess wore the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Sautoir Necklace, an elaborate piece featuring pearl beading and an eye-catching heart-shaped amethyst and diamond pendant.

The deep purple of Catherine’s gown also complemented the darker direction of her autumn wardrobe. Traditionally linked with mystery and magic, the rich, opulent shade gave the ensemble a slightly gothic character while remaining suitably luxurious for an evening occasion.

Kate continued her embrace of deeper seasonal colours during her visit to the Isle of Bute, where she unveiled another new outfit with a distinctly autumnal feel.

Keeping the foundation of her look relaxed, the Princess paired brown skinny jeans from Holland Cooper with a simple turtleneck jumper. She then transformed the casual combination with a sophisticated new Burberry trench coat.

The chocolate-brown outerwear featured a sharply tailored, double-breasted silhouette that added structure and polish to the ensemble. A glimpse of Burberry’s instantly recognisable house check lining could also be seen towards the lower hem, providing a distinctive finishing detail to Catherine’s understated autumn look.

Kate began September with another sophisticated dark-toned look as she accompanied Prince George to Eton College for the start of his secondary education.

Despite the heavy rain, the mother of three looked polished for the important family milestone, carrying a large umbrella while revisiting a bottle-green Emilia Wickstead dress that she first wore in 2023.

The rich green shade complemented the gloomy weather and continued the deeper colour palette seen throughout Catherine’s recent wardrobe. Featuring a rounded neckline, the elegant dress fell below the knee in a classic A-line shape, while its softly flowing skirt moved effortlessly as the Princess walked.
