William Happily Steps Back as Confident Kate Commands the Spotlight on Royal Engagements

Prince William has spent more than two decades carrying out royal engagements on his own, having begun undertaking solo duties in 2005. Despite his extensive experience in front of the public, one royal author believes there is a noticeable change in his demeanour whenever Princess Kate is alongside him and becomes the centre of attention.

Catherine has accompanied her husband on several engagements throughout the year. Their latest joint appearance took them to Scotland’s Isle of Bute last week, where the couple joined a beach clean-up and met members of the local community.

The same dynamic has been evident throughout their marriage at major royal occasions and traditional annual events such as Trooping the Colour, with William frequently appearing particularly comfortable when Catherine is beside him.

Simon Vigar, author of The Four Wives of Windsor, told HELLO!: “William definitely visibly relaxes when Catherine is near, and you see a similar thing with Charles and Camilla, actually.”

Vigar believes William is entirely comfortable allowing Catherine to become the main focus during their joint appearances, describing their partnership as markedly different from the dynamic once associated with Charles and Diana.

He said: “William is very happy for Catherine to take the spotlight in a way that back in the day Charles wasn’t with Diana, of course, but he is now with Camilla. They are clearly a double act.”

According to the royal author, having Catherine alongside William is likely to become even more significant as his responsibilities increase in the years ahead. He suggested their public partnership could become particularly prominent once William eventually succeeds to the throne.

Vigar added: “It’s very hard to do that job on your own, and I think we’ll see an even stronger double act when the time comes, when William becomes king. She’s obviously very, very important to him personally and publicly.”

Prince William and Princess Kаte during their visit to thе Isle of Bute

William and Catherine, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland, appeared in cheerful spirits as they travelled to the Isle of Bute for their first official visit to the island on 17 September.

The engagement came amid renewed attention surrounding the Royal Family following a series of controversial allegations from William’s uncle, Earl Charles Spencer. Despite the headlines, the Prince and Princess of Wales continued with their scheduled duties as normal.

Their day focused heavily on Bute’s strong sense of community and tradition of volunteering. William and Catherine joined efforts to clear rubbish from Ettrick Bay Beach before taking part in a game of shinty, giving the couple an opportunity to meet local residents and highlight the work being carried out across the island.

William and Catherine appeared relaxed and upbeat throughout their time on the island, with the couple sharing a playful moment during their walkabout.

As Catherine continued speaking with members of the public, William jokingly reminded her that they still had plenty of people further along the route to greet. Tapping his watch, he teased his wife: “You’ve got to speed up, you’ve got to get all the way down there before you go,” according to footage shared by Kings Guard Tours.

Their visit to Port Bannatyne also gave the couple an opportunity to speak directly with local residents. One woman singled out Catherine’s long-standing work on early childhood development and praised the attention she has brought to the subject.

She told the Princess: “You’ve done more over the past five years to highlight it than anyone else in my lifetime.”

Catherine responded by emphasising how strongly she remains committed to the issue, saying: “I’m really passionate about it. It’s needed now more than ever.”
