Prince William and Princess Kate have taken legal action to defend their family’s privacy after Paris Match magazine published unauthorized photos of their private holiday in the French Alps last April.
The images showed the couple enjoying rare downtime with their children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — skiing and relaxing on their chalet balcony.
A Kensington Palace spokesperson confirmed that “the Prince and Princess of Wales have been successful in legal proceedings brought in France against the owner of Paris Match” following the release of what they described as “a grossly intrusive article and long-lens paparazzi photographs of their private family holiday.”
The ruling, the spokesperson said, reaffirms that “notwithstanding their public duties as members of the royal family, Their Royal Highnesses and their children are entitled to respect for their private lives and family time, without unlawful interference and intrusion.”
They further emphasized that William and Kate remain “committed to protecting their private family time and ensuring that their children can grow up without undue scrutiny and interference,” adding firmly: “They will not hesitate to take such action as is necessary to enforce those boundaries.”
It is understood that Prince William and Princess Kate initiated legal proceedings on 28 April — just 12 days after Paris Match published the intrusive article and photographs. A preliminary hearing took place in June, followed by a key session on 18 September.
On that date, Sandrine Gil, president of the first chamber of the Nanterre court, issued an interim order that was later confirmed as a final ruling on 14 October.
The court found that Paris Match had violated the privacy and image rights of the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children. As part of the judgment, the magazine was ordered to pay the couple’s legal costs in France and to publish a formal notice acknowledging the breach — a significant victory for the royal couple in their ongoing effort to safeguard their family’s privacy.
