Prince William Sends a Quiet but Powerful Signal That Challenges Claims Made by Harry and Meghan

Prince William has once again appeared to counter a past claim made by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a newly released video. The Prince of Wales, 43, features in a new project alongside former Lioness Jill Scott, highlighting the importance of communities having access to green spaces.

Launched to mark the 100th anniversary of the charity Fields in Trust, the initiative sees William — who serves as the organisation’s President — teaming up with Jill to promote the value of parks and playing fields. In the video, the Prince is seen warmly greeting Jill with an affectionate hug as they meet.

The moment has drawn attention because it contrasts with a claim previously made by Meghan Markle in the 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan.

Recalling the first time William and Princess Catherine joined her and Harry for dinner, Meghan said: “Even when Will and Kate came over and I was meeting her for the first time, I remember I was in ripped jeans, I was barefoot.”

She continued: “I’ve always been a hugger. I didn’t realise that was really jarring for a lot of Brits. I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside.”

Harry later echoed a similar claim about his brother in his memoir Spare, published in 2023.

In the book, the Duke of Sussex described the first time William met Meghan, writing: “I introduced Meg, who leaned in and gave him a hug, which completely freaked him out. He recoiled.” Harry went on to suggest that William is uncomfortable hugging people he doesn’t know.

However, this portrayal has been repeatedly challenged by William’s public behavior over the years — including in the newly released video — with many royal fans pointing out how warm, approachable, and affectionate he often appears with members of the public.

One fan even poked fun at the long-running narrative in the comments section of the video, writing: “Huh. I thought royals didn’t hug.”
