William and Kate Continue Long-Standing Family Agreement With George, Charlotte and Louis

Prince William and Princess Catherine are expected to adopt strict measures to protect the future partners of their three children, according to a royal expert.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are reportedly determined to shield Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight, from unnecessary media attention as they grow older. If their children begin serious relationships in the future, William and Catherine are expected to follow the same privacy arrangements that helped safeguard their own romance while they were studying at the University of St Andrews.

Former broadcaster and royal author Simon Vigar believes the couple have already given significant thought to how they will handle their children’s future relationships, with privacy expected to remain a top priority.

Speaking to GB News, royal author and former broadcaster Simon Vigar explained how Prince William and Princess Catherine are expected to handle the eventual public introduction of their children’s future partners.

According to Vigar, the Waleses are likely to take a careful and measured approach, ensuring any future relationships are given time to develop away from the public spotlight before introducing their children’s partners to the wider world.

William and Catherine themselves benefited from what became known as the “Gentleman’s Agreement” during their years at the University of St Andrews. Under the informal arrangement, the media agreed to respect the Prince’s privacy, allowing him to focus on his studies and enjoy a relatively normal university experience away from intense public scrutiny.

During the early years of their relationship, William and Catherine were able to build their romance away from the public eye thanks to an informal media blackout. The arrangement allowed them to focus on university life while getting to know one another without constant press attention.

Royal expert Simon Vigar believes the Prince and Princess of Wales are likely to adopt a similar approach for their own children. He praised the early privacy surrounding William and Catherine’s relationship, describing it as invaluable and adding that the British media deserved credit for respecting the agreement.

The couple first met at the University of St Andrews in 2001, initially forming a close friendship before their relationship became romantic about a year later. They were able to enjoy nearly two years together in private before news of their romance became public.

The privacy agreement was broken only once, in 2001, when a television crew from Ardent Productions—then owned by Prince Edward—arrived at the University of St Andrews and attempted to film Prince William on campus.

The incident occurred just two days after William began his first term and prompted an immediate response from university officials, who ordered the crew to leave. Ardent Productions later issued a public apology, and no further breaches of the agreement were reported for the remainder of William’s time at university.

Simon Vigar believes Prince William and Princess Catherine will aim to secure a similar privacy arrangement when Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis eventually begin university.

He suggested that the way the media reports on their children’s future relationships is also likely to evolve over time, adding that there will be changes to “what can be printed” once they begin dating. According to Vigar, “It’ll definitely develop.”

Prince William has previously spoken about his plans for the future monarchy, making it clear that protecting his family from relentless media attention will remain one of his top priorities when he becomes King.

During an appearance on the Apple TV+ documentary The Reluctant Traveler, the Prince of Wales hinted that he intends to introduce changes aimed at giving his children greater privacy as they grow into adulthood.

Reflecting on the future, William simply said: “Change is on the agenda.”
