Prince William Receives His Wildest Honour Yet — And His Reaction Says It All

Prince William has been given a rather unusual honour — and it may well be a first for a member of the Royal Family.

Australian television personality Robert Irwin, who has developed a close working relationship with the Prince of Wales through the Earthshot Prize, has named a crocodile after the future King.

The newly named “Prince William” is a 3.8-metre saltwater crocodile from the Wenlock River. The animal is being studied as part of a research programme at the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, which was named in memory of Robert’s late father.

Sharing the announcement on Instagram, Robert explained the reason behind the unusual tribute, saying: “We named him in recognition of Prince William’s remarkable commitment to conservation and to mark the halfway point of The Earthshot Prize.”

Robert then proudly presented his newly named reptile on camera, revealing that the crocodile also represented an important milestone for the team’s research work.

He said: “I’m very proud to say that this big boy here is the 300th crocodile that we have caught.”

Prince William appeared delighted by the unusual tribute. The Prince of Wales showed his appreciation by “liking” Robert’s Instagram post through the joint account he shares with Princess Catherine, @theprinceandprincessofwales.

What will Prince William’s crоcodile do?

The crocodile will now be monitored over the next decade, allowing researchers to gather detailed information about his behaviour and biology. The long-term study will examine everything from his diet and diving abilities to the impact that changing climate conditions may have on his body temperature.

To support the research, the animal has been equipped with an advanced GPS tracking device. This technology will enable conservation experts to follow his movements and collect valuable information about the habitats and environments he uses over the coming years.

The reptile marks an important milestone for the ongoing conservation programme, becoming the 300th crocodile to be tagged as part of the extensive research project.

Celebrating the achievement, Robert said: “This is a really exciting milestone. In gratitude and in recognition of the incredible conservation work from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, we wanted to name this extremely special modern-day dinosaur, this amazing animal, after His Royal Highness. Meet Prince William! Here he is!”

Irwin, who helps manage Australia Zoo in Queensland, also serves as an ambassador for William’s Earthshot Prize. The environmental initiative is now halfway through its ten-year mission to discover, support and reward innovative solutions aimed at tackling some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Prince William’s unusual new honour comes at an important moment for his family, with Prince George preparing to begin his education at Eton College in Windsor next week.

The 13-year-old royal is set to become one of the prestigious school’s newest pupils, continuing a family tradition by following in the footsteps of his father, who also attended Eton.

Ahead of Prince George’s arrival at Eton, the prestigious school has reportedly placed “no photography” notices on fencing around the grounds, a move intended to give the young royal as much privacy as possible while he continues his education.

Meanwhile, William and Catherine have been enjoying their final weeks with all three children at home before the family’s routine changes. George is expected to become a boarder at the all-boys school, marking a significant new chapter for the 13-year-old.

The Prince and Princess of Wales recently spent time at Balmoral with King Charles alongside George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The family left the Aberdeenshire estate last week as they began preparing for the children’s return to school.

While George prepares for Eton, 11-year-old Charlotte and eight-year-old Louis are set to return to Lambrook, where they have been pupils for the past several years.
